The Holmes Community College community and the wider basketball family are mourning the tragic loss of Brooke Walker, assistant coach of the women’s basketball team, who died in a car accident on January 12, 2025.
Walker, a passionate coach, mentor, and advocate for young athletes, was 30 years old.
The devastating accident occurred near her hometown of Oxford, Mississippi, leaving a profound void in the lives of her family, friends, students, and colleagues.
Known affectionately as “Queen B” by those close to her, Walker’s influence extended far beyond the court, as she impacted countless lives through her dedication, charisma, and love for the game.
Brooke Walker, a native of Crystal Springs, Mississippi, was in her fourth season as an assistant coach for the Holmes Community College women’s basketball team.
During her tenure, she was instrumental in developing players both athletically and personally, earning admiration from her colleagues and students alike.
Walker brought a wealth of experience to Holmes, having coached at various levels before joining the college. In 2020 and 2021, she served as the head coach at Humphreys Academy in Belzoni, where she led the junior high and high school girls’ teams to remarkable successes.
Her junior high team clinched the district title, while her high school team swept the district, North State, and MAIS A State championships. Her achievements earned her the title of MAIS A Coach of the Year, cementing her reputation as a skilled and dedicated coach.
In addition to her work at Holmes, Walker was actively involved in youth basketball as the head coach of the Team Mississippi 15U team and assistant coach of both the Team Mississippi 18U team and the Mississippi Jazz AAU teams (6th-12th grade). Under her leadership, her AAU teams achieved significant milestones, including two Nike National Championships and 15 local and regional titles.
A Life Steeped in Basketball
Walker’s love for basketball began during her high school years at Copiah Academy, where she excelled as a player. She was named team MVP, MAIS All-Star, and First Team All-Conference. Her skills on the court earned her a place on the Northwest Mississippi Community College team, where she played for two seasons before transferring to the University of Mississippi.
Walker earned an associate degree from Northwest Mississippi Community College and later completed her bachelor’s degree in general studies, with minors in sociology, English, and education, from the University of Mississippi
