James Wilford Carter Sr., age 90, of Spring City, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at the Life Care Center of Rhea County in Dayton. A man of many talents and quiet strength, James leaves behind a legacy of craftsmanship, family, and a life well-lived.
Born on October 25, 1934, in Martinsville, Virginia, to the late William Stafford and Myrtle Mae Bell Carter, James grew up in a family rooted in hard work and resilience. These values stayed with him throughout his life, shaping him into a man who found joy in creating with his hands and spending time with loved ones.
James moved to Spring City, Tennessee, in 1999 after living in South Carolina for many years. Known for his passion for woodworking, James was a skilled carpenter whose creations brought beauty and functionality to those around him. His meticulous craftsmanship and dedication to his work made him a beloved figure in his community. Beyond his love for woodworking, James was an avid fan of women’s basketball, finding joy in watching the sport and admiring the skill and dedication of the players.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Carter, with whom he shared many cherished years. James also joins his sister, Diane Doss, and his brothers, Thomas Jerry Carter and Jerome Neal Carter, in eternal rest.
James’s legacy lives on through his family, who will carry forward the values and love he imparted during his lifetime. He is survived by:

- His daughter, Loretta Lynn Holbird of Clover, South Carolina
- His sister, Deborah of South Carolina
