(PINPOINT WEATHER) — It is looking more and more likely that the snow drought in Charlotte will end on Friday.
However, this is not going to be your average winter wonderland storm, as we are expecting freezing rain and sleet to mix in Friday night into Saturday morning. This will cut into snow totals significantly.
This system will start initially as snowfall Friday afternoon and evening; however, freezing rain and sleet will mix in with the snow Friday night due to warmer air in the upper levels of the atmosphere.
The wintry mix will begin earlier for our South Carolina counties, which is why snow totals will be very low there. This includes Union, Anson, and Richmond counties as well. These areas could receive up to 1 tenth of an inch of ice as well.
The Charlotte metro region will experience at least 1 inch of snowfall, but 2 inches of snowfall is possible as you get further north towards I-40.
In the Charlotte metro, models are indicating between .10 and .25 tenths of an inch of ice.
Less of a wintry mix will be present towards the foothills and mountains, which will allow snow totals to get closer to 3 inches.
The western-facing slopes in the mountains will continue to experience snowfall through the day on Saturday, which will allow some accumulations up to 6 inches.
The main takeaway from this storm is that travel will be rough around sundown Friday and through much of the day on Saturday.
The storm will end Saturday morning, but it will take some time for road crews to catch up to the road conditions. It is best to stay indoors starting Friday night and through the day on Saturday. Unless your roads are clear on Saturday afternoon.
The snow and ice forecast is subject to change.
