HICKORY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Brevard College football player is in the hospital after he was shot while out celebrating New Year’s.
Officers say they were called to 2nd Street NW and Main Avenue NW just after 2 a.m. on New Year’s Day, where they found 22-year-old Jordan Ramey, of Yadkinville, shot on one of the sidewalks. He was taken to Frye Regional Medical Center but was later airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Ramey is in stable condition.
According to his GoFundMe, Ramey was celebrating New Year’s Eve with friends. While he was walking to his Uber, a fight broke out nearby, and he was hit by two shots.
Police confirmed that the suspected shooter, 20-year-old Javier Hampton Trevino Jr., of Lenoir, was “engaging” with a group of people before the shooting. Trevino ran after the shooting but was arrested the next day.
Trevino is charged with two counts of Attempted First Degree Murder and one count of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury. He is being held without bond at the Catawba County Justice Center. The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office and Lenoir Police helped with the arrest.
Police confirmed that Jordan Ramey was not involved in the dispute or shooting, except for being injured as a bystander. His GoFundMe says Ramey is stable but will need extensive care over the next several months.
“Jordan is a great friend, a dedicated athlete, loving brother and son,” the fundraiser states.
The investigation into the shooting is still ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Inv. Tammie Johnson at tjohnson@hickorync.gov or call Hickory Police at 828-328-5551.
