(PINPOINT WEATHER) — Good Sunday Morning! We will have to stay weather aware today, as today is a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day. We are tracking the threat of severe weather, along with some isolated flash flooding issues due to heavy rainfall.
TORNADO WATCH ISSUED UNTIL 1 P.M. This includes Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Union, Gaston, Cleveland, Catawba, Burke, Alexander, Iredell, and Rowan counties in North Carolina. The tornado watch includes Chester, Lancaster, and Chesterfield counties in South Carolina.
The dreary conditions are continuing into our Sunday, with areas of dense fog and mist this morning. We also have a few lighter showers moving into the mountains and foothills.
Despite the gloomy start to the day, temperatures are warming up this morning towards the 50s and 60s. A milder pattern takes shape as you step outdoors.
The main concern today will be damaging wind gusts, as a potent line of storms moves through the region from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. today. This will be a quick-moving line of storms, but it could pack a punch during the short time it is here. The line of storms will produce 30-40 mph gusts, however, a few isolated storms within the line could produce 50-60 mph wind gusts, creating a damaging wind threat.

There is also a low threat of an isolated tornado or two today. The threat is low, but not zero. There will be some twisting of the winds as the line of storms moves through, which could produce a quick spin-up tornado. If a tornado does form today, it will form quickly and will occur with little warning. Be sure to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts today. Best to stay indoors for the first half of the day if possible.
Around dinner today, a few models are hinting at a potential second broken line of storms moving through the Queen City News Viewing Area. Even those storms could produce stronger wind gusts and an isolated tornado. While the main threat will occur late morning to early afternoon, keep an eye on the sky throughout today.
It will be milder today, with temperatures in the 60s across most of the area. We are expecting a gradual clearing of the weather tonight and into your Monday.
Monday will bring more sunshine and dry conditions, with high temperatures in the 60s.
Another cold front will approach for New Year’s Eve, which will bring scattered showers back into the forecast. Not a washout, but a few showers here and there for the last day of 2024.
New Year’s Day will be dry, but generally cooler. High temperatures will be in the 50s to start the New Year, with a colder weather pattern taking shape for later this week.
