Randolph Taylor Jr Obituary, Death; – Birmingham Police are conducting an investigation following a shooting incident that resulted in a fatality on Saturday afternoon.
At approximately 12:25 p.m., officers responded to a shot spotter alert in the 600 block of Cotton Avenue SW. Upon arrival, they were informed that an individual had been shot at 633 Cotton Avenue SW, near the West End walking trail.
Upon reaching the scene, officers discovered 48-year-old Randolph Taylor Jr. suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived shortly thereafter and pronounced Mr. Taylor deceased at the location.
Preliminary findings from the Birmingham Police indicate that the victim was engaged in a physical confrontation with the suspect in the park. During this altercation, the suspect discharged a firearm, striking the victim, and subsequently fled the scene on foot.
The Birmingham Police Department has deployed various resources, including a K-9 unit, to assist in locating the suspect. Authorities currently believe the suspect fled towards the Quick Mart store in the direction of Tuscaloosa Avenue.
At this stage, it remains unclear whether the suspect and the victim were acquainted; however, it is believed that the victim was simply spending time at the park. Officer Truman Fitzgerald of the BPD has stated that witnesses have come forward, and detectives will be interviewing them at police headquarters.
