Prentiss Jackson Obituary, Death; – A 56-year-old man named Prentiss Jackson lost his life early Sunday in a hit-and-run incident while cycling on Carlson Boulevard near Bayview Avenue, as reported by authorities.
The event took place around 2 a.m. on December 8, when firefighters from Station 64 responded to a report of a vehicle accident. Upon their arrival, they discovered a single vehicle that had gone off the road, crashing into barrier fencing and thick shrubbery. The driver and any passengers had fled the scene prior to the arrival of emergency personnel.
Firefighters found Jackson, who was believed to be riding a bicycle, trapped under the wreckage of the vehicle and entangled in fencing material. Despite a 25-minute extrication effort that involved additional support from Engine 67, Rescue 67, and El Cerrito Engine 71, Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe injuries.
A steel fence post was discovered lodged through the driver’s side window of the vehicle, narrowly avoiding any occupants. Fire officials remarked that the situation could have been significantly worse, as the vehicle narrowly missed colliding with an occupied homeless encampment. “This is a very sad and unfortunate event,” stated Richmond Firefighters Local 188, urging drivers to remain vigilant regarding pedestrians, particularly on local roadways.
Lynnelle Sanchez, Public Information Officer for the Richmond Police Department, indicated that the collision is under investigation as a hit-and-run, with police actively seeking to identify the driver of the vehicle. “Preliminary information suggests that the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was transient and was riding a bicycle at the time of the incident,” Sanchez noted. “We have yet to determine if the victim was affiliated with the nearby homeless encampment.”
