Sarah Ann Williams Obituary, Death; – Virginia State Police are conducting an investigation into a fatal multi-vehicle collision that occurred on I-81 in Wythe County, resulting in the death of a woman from North Carolina and serious injuries to two other individuals on November 30.
According to VSP, at approximately 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, November 30, a 2018 Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer was traveling northbound on I-81 near mile marker 59 when it collided with a 2014 Chrysler Town and Country van that was stationary in the right lane. Following the impact, the tractor-trailer veered off the left side of the roadway, struck a guardrail, overturned, and subsequently ignited.
The force of the collision caused the Chrysler to initially veer off the right side of the road before re-entering traffic. It then exited the left side of the roadway and collided with the guardrail.
A passenger in the Town and Country, identified as 73-year-old Sarah Ann Williams from Kinston, NC, was transported to the hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The other two occupants of the van, 77-year-old Marquerite Clegg from Godwin, NC, and 78-year-old John Clegg, sustained serious injuries. Authorities have not yet determined the driver of the vehicle.
VSP reported that the two individuals in the tractor-trailer, identified as Harpinger Singh and Kamaljeet Singh, both from Tracy, California, allegedly fled the scene following the incident. Both individuals have been charged with felony hit and run. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
