Endicott College Police Sergeant Jeremy Cole, 49, tragically lost his life in a crash on I-95 in Newbury involving a wrong-way Tesla driver. Cole, a resident of Exeter, New Hampshire, was driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer when the collision occurred.
According to Massachusetts State Police, the incident began around midnight on the night before Thanksgiving. New Hampshire State Police reported a Tesla traveling south in the wrong direction on I-95, crossing into Massachusetts.
Law enforcement from both states monitored the Tesla as it passed through Newburyport, while a tire-deflation device was being prepared in Georgetown. Unfortunately, before the Tesla could reach the device, it collided with the Chevrolet Trailblazer carrying Sgt. Cole near mile marker 81.5 in Newbury.
Sgt. Cole was pronounced dead at the scene. The Tesla’s driver, a man in his 40s from southeastern Massachusetts, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a Boston hospital. Authorities have stated that he is expected to face charges, although his identity and the specific charges remain undisclosed.
“We extend our deepest condolences to Sergeant Cole’s family, loved ones, and colleagues during this difficult time,” said Massachusetts State Police in a statement.
The crash is under active investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detectives and the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.
