BRPD homicide detectives are actively investigating a tragic drive-by shooting on Swan Avenue that occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, November 27. The incident has left the Baton Rouge community in shock, as it resulted in the death of an 8-year-old boy, Diellon Daniels, and injuries to two of his siblings.
The shooting took place around 2:15 p.m. while a mother was driving with her five children in the car. According to police, the family’s vehicle was struck multiple times by gunfire.
Three of the five siblings suffered serious gunshot wounds and were rushed to the hospital for treatment. Sadly, young Diellon succumbed to his injuries. The devastating event has underscored the rising concern over gun violence in the area, leaving many questioning the motives behind such a heinous act.
Authorities report discovering approximately 60 shell casings at the scene, indicating the indiscriminate nature of the attack. “I hope that people are as mad as I am,” stated Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul. “There’s 20 or 30 shell casings in the street.
This car was hit about that many times, but it’s not worth it.” The chief’s remarks reflect the frustration and anger felt by law enforcement and the community over the reckless violence that claimed a young life and endangered several others.
Despite the gravity of the incident, police have not yet identified any suspects or made arrests. Investigators are diligently working to piece together evidence and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
