James Mitchell Obituary, Death: James Mitchell Smith, 73, of Woodruff, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. Born in Spartanburg, James was the son of the late Jack Julius and Geneva Lois Ketner Smith and the devoted husband of Deborah Atkinson Smith. A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a former member of Wabtec, James leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and love. James lived a life of commitment and integrity. His time in the Marine Corps instilled values of honor, duty, and resilience, which he carried into his professional and personal life. After his military service, James retired from a successful career with Wabtec, where he was known for his hard work and camaraderie with his colleagues.
Family was at the heart of James’s life. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who cherished time with his loved ones. He is survived by his wife, Deborah, who stood by his side through life’s many milestones. James’s family includes his daughter, Kimberly S. Miller, and her husband, Clint; his son, Danny Newman, and his wife, Kelly; and his five grandchildren—Darius Newman, Avery Hamilton and wife, Hannah, Ayden Miller, Karissa Newman, and Addison Miller. He was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Nevaeh Franklin and Bennett Hamilton, who brought him immense joy.
James shared a special bond with his life-long friend, Dennis Milligan, who remained a steadfast companion through the years. He was predeceased by his grandson, Andrew Hamilton; a sister, Debbie Martin; and a brother, Julius Smith, whose memories he treasured. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 24, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Stribling Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place on Monday, November 25, 2024, at 12:30 PM in the Stribling Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Scott Allen officiating. Following the service, James will be laid to rest at Westwood Memorial Gardens. James Mitchell Smith will be remembered as a man of principle, kindness, and devotion to those he loved.
