LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. — Tensions flared during the Loudoun County School Board meeting Tuesday night when the public comment period was cut short amid concerns raised about a student allegedly linked to gang activity. Chair Melinda Mansfield ended the session after repeated warnings to parents who spoke out about a current student with a history of gun possession and threats.
The student, now attending Loudoun Valley High School, was previously arrested in May 2023 for carrying a firearm and making a threat to kill a classmate at Blue Ridge Middle School.
Sources have alleged that the student is connected to the MS-13 gang and is in the U.S. without legal status.
During the comment period, multiple parents voiced their concerns about the student’s continued attendance in the school district.
“A known gang member with a criminal record who was suspended from LCPS was allowed back in school,” said Michael Rivera, one of the parents who spoke before the session was ended.
Another parent, Abbie Platt, questioned the safety of students in the district. “Where’s the protection and the safety for our children who are in school with other children who have [made] known threats, who have been arrested, and who are back in the school, and my daughter is terrified to go to school with him,” she said.
Mansfield interrupted speakers several times, stating that their comments violated school board policy by potentially identifying the student involved.
“Just by what you’re saying right now is personally identifiable information,” she said at one point.
The comment period was ended with four people still scheduled to speak, prompting outcry from some attendees. Former school board member Tiffany Polifko accused the board of suppressing free speech. “You want to violate their First Amendment and stop your constituents from speaking,” she said.
The incident comes as parents and community members continue to debate safety measures and transparency within Loudoun County Public Schools, particularly when addressing students with disciplinary or criminal backgrounds.
