ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — A man accused of assaulting a woman and threatening her with a handgun surrendered to police Sunday morning after a standoff that prompted the activation of the Atlantic City Police Department’s Emergency Response Team.
Officers responded to a home on the first block of North Raleigh Avenue at 6:55 a.m. following a report of an assault involving a woman and a man she had a relationship with. The victim, who displayed visible injuries, told police that the suspect, Jamal Bruce, was armed and inside the residence with his children, according to authorities.
Police attempted to contact Bruce, 33, who refused to exit the home, leading to a multi-hour standoff. The Emergency Response Team, including members of the Crisis Negotiation Team, were deployed to the scene, police said.
Bruce ultimately surrendered to SWAT team members after negotiations. Police confirmed that his children were not harmed, and the victim was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Bruce faces charges including aggravated assault, terroristic threats, and unlawful possession of a weapon, police said.
