Albany, NY – The New York State Police Academy conducted pepper spray training for its 215th Basic School recruits. The training included supervised exposure to Oleoresin Capsicum (OC), commonly known as pepper spray.
OC, an oily resin found in pepper glands, is utilized as a less lethal tool during civil disturbances or when arresting violent or resistive suspects. The training is designed to ensure recruits can still effectively use their police powers in real-world scenarios, even if they are contaminated with OC during its application.
Following the exposure, recruits were required to complete an obstacle course, issue proper police commands, and effect the arrest of a role player. After successfully navigating these tasks, each recruit was permitted to clean up under the supervision of an instructor.
This exercise is a mandatory component of the training at the New York State Police Academy, equipping recruits with the necessary experience to handle OC in practical situations.
