JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — In New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s quest for ‘educational equity’, another neighborhood elementary school is being forced to closed. This comes weeks after the Rosenauer Elementary school in Jackson was shut down due to budget cuts in affluent communities in order to pay for education in poor and urban cities.
The Jefferson Township School District will close Cozy Lake Elementary School at the end of the school year, citing cuts in state funding as a primary factor. In addition to the closure, the district plans to sell another building, formerly a school, as part of its financial strategy.
Preschoolers and students from Cozy Lake will be transferred to other elementary schools in the district, according to a letter sent to parents. Fourth-grade students and older will attend different facilities for their education next year.
One local parent voiced frustration over the decision, stating, “I don’t think that they are thinking about the kids. It is all about money, which is sad because we will pay a lot in taxes.” Another parent, upset by the changes, has announced plans to run for a seat on the Board of Education.
District officials said they are committed to providing an age-appropriate curriculum for affected students. They also noted that the school closure and sale of the central office building are part of ongoing efforts to manage the district’s budget amid a 60% cut in state aid.
Further discussions between the district and state officials are underway to explore additional funding options, including grants.
