SCRANTON, Pa. — Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro faced online backlash after posting a video of himself signing a missile at the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant over the weekend. The missile, potentially headed for Ukraine as part of U.S. military aid in its ongoing war against Russia, drew criticism from some social media users.
Shapiro, considered a potential running mate for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, shared the video with a message supporting Ukraine.
The act was criticized a celebration of war by the Pennsylvania Democat.
“We must all do our part in the fight for freedom,” he wrote, praising the workers in Scranton and expressing solidarity with Ukrainian soldiers.
The gesture, while intended to show support for Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression, was met with criticism online. Some users questioned the appropriateness of autographing military equipment potentially destined for a war zone.
Shapiro made the visit to the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant, located in President Joe Biden’s hometown, as part of an ongoing show of support for Ukraine in the conflict. The U.S. has been supplying military aid to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.
