Survey shows 75% of dog owners face rising pet care costs
A recent survey of dog owners across the United States reveals that 75% are experiencing increased expenses related to their pets, with veterinary care and food costs leading the surge. The findings highlight the growing financial burden associated with pet ownership, as costs rise in several key areas.
The survey, conducted by dog harness supplier PawSafe.com, polled 588 dog owners about their spending habits. According to the data, nearly 45% of respondents reported significant increases in pet care costs, while 30.8% noted slight increases. Only 23.7% of owners said their expenses had remained the same, and just 1.5% reported any decrease.
Veterinary care was the top category driving cost increases, with 83.8% of dog owners reporting higher expenses for medical treatment. The rising cost of procedures, diagnostics, and preventive care is seen as a contributing factor. While advancements in veterinary medicine are benefiting pets’ health, they are also contributing to these financial challenges.
Food and treats ranked second, with 75.5% of dog owners indicating they are spending more to feed their pets. This may be tied to rising ingredient prices and a growing focus on higher-quality or specialized diets.
Grooming services and accessories also saw price hikes, with nearly 40% of owners citing increases in these areas.
A spokesperson for PawSafe.com noted that the findings reflect both the financial commitment of dog ownership and a shift in consumer behavior. “We’re seeing a trend toward higher-quality nutrition for pets, which suggests that despite the rising costs, many owners are prioritizing their dogs’ health and well-being,” the spokesperson said.
Pet insurance premiums were another area of concern, with 15% of insured owners reporting higher costs for coverage. The survey results indicate that the financial demands of dog ownership may continue to grow as the pet care industry expands.
