BAYONNE, N.J. — The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) has opened an investigation into the death of a man following a police encounter in Bayonne early Monday morning.
According to preliminary information, Bayonne police officers were dispatched to an apartment building on Broadway near Linnet Street at 12:18 a.m. after a 911 call reported screaming from one of the units. When officers arrived, they heard yelling from inside the apartment.
Officers encountered an adult male and called for medical assistance. The man was restrained by officers for transport to Bayonne Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:44 a.m. His identity has not yet been released, and the cause of death remains under investigation.
The investigation is being conducted under a 2019 New Jersey law that requires the Attorney General’s Office to investigate any death that occurs during an encounter with law enforcement. The findings will be presented to a grand jury to determine whether criminal charges are warranted.
