WASHINGTON, D.C. – A man has been arrested in connection with an Unlawful Possession of a Firearm offense following a police investigation in Northeast D.C.
On August 28, 2024, officers from the Robbery Suppression Unit were patrolling the 4500 block of Quarles Street, Northeast, when they observed a man exit a suspicious vehicle. When officers attempted to approach him, the man fled, running toward I-295 southbound and jumping from a retaining wall. Officers saw the man place a firearm into a storm drain before escaping on the back of a motorcycle. The motorcycle’s operator has since been identified.
During the recovery of the firearm, the gun discharged, fatally wounding an officer. The officer, identified as Investigator Wayne David, was transported to an area hospital by helicopter, where he later died.
On Wednesday night, 27-year-old Tyrell Lamonte Bailey of Northeast D.C. surrendered to police and was arrested without incident. He was charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
Chief Pamela A. Smith expressed her gratitude to the community and law enforcement partners for their assistance, stating, “Our focus is on honoring the memory and legacy of Investigator Wayne David.” MPD continues to offer support to David’s family during this difficult time.
The investigation received assistance from the FBI Washington Field Office, ATF Washington Field Division, and the U.S. Marshals Service.
