WHITEWATER, Wis. — A 21-year-old college gymnast from Illinois was shot and killed in her off-campus apartment on Friday night, just days before starting her senior year at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The tragic death of Kara Welsh has left her family, friends, and the university community in mourning.
The Whitewater Police Department reported on Saturday that a 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting. The suspect, whose name has not been released, was booked into the Walworth County Jail on several charges, including first-degree intentional homicide, a Class A felony in Wisconsin that carries a potential sentence of life imprisonment.
Authorities have also charged the suspect with disorderly conduct while armed and endangering safety through the use of a dangerous weapon.
