CNN found itself in hot water after airing a supposedly “live” interview with Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on Thursday night.
Some viewers were quick to cry foul when they noticed that while the interview aired, both Harris and Walz were simultaneously attending a campaign rally in Savannah, Georgia. The incident left many wondering: how could Harris be in two places at once?
Those viewers were probably not CNN viewers as they’re well acclimated to CNN’s daily deceptive news, misinformation, and biased reports.
The network had initially announced that the interview was pre-recorded, which seemed straightforward enough. However, when the segment aired with a prominent “LIVE” banner across the screen, viewers felt misled. The fact that both political figures were very much alive and kicking it at a rally while the interview aired only added to the suspicion that CNN was pulling a fast one.
Kamala Harris Tackles Shifting Stances
Despite the controversy surrounding the broadcast, the interview itself contained some noteworthy moments, particularly when Harris addressed accusations of flip-flopping on key issues. Critics have pointed out that her positions have evolved since her 2019 presidential run, especially on topics like Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, and fracking.
Harris was quick to defend her shifting stances, emphasizing that while her policy decisions may have evolved, her core values remain unchanged. “The most important and most significant aspect of my policy perspective and decisions is my values have not changed,” Harris asserted. She reaffirmed her belief in the climate crisis and pointed to the Inflation Reduction Act as evidence of the White House’s commitment to addressing it.
Fracking and the Clean Energy Debate
One of the most hotly debated topics during the interview was fracking, a method of extracting natural gas and oil that has long been a flashpoint for environmentalists and energy advocates alike. Harris acknowledged her promise during the 2020 vice presidential debate that she wouldn’t seek to ban fracking and reassured viewers that she has kept that promise. In fact, she highlighted that she had cast a tie-breaking vote to increase leases for fracking as vice president.
“I cast the tie-breaking vote that actually increased leases for fracking as vice president,” Harris said, reminding viewers of her role in expanding the practice. Yet, she was careful to note that it’s possible to have “a thriving clean energy economy without banning fracking.”
Border Security and Immigration
The interview also covered Harris’s stance on immigration, a topic that has been a consistent part of her portfolio. When asked about those who cross the border unlawfully, Harris was firm in her response. “I believe there should be consequences. We have laws that have to be followed and enforced that address and deal with people who cross our border illegally,” she said, drawing on her experience as California’s Attorney General.
Harris didn’t miss the opportunity to criticize former President Donald Trump, accusing him of pushing Republicans to kill a bipartisan border security bill. “My value around what we need to do to secure our border — that value has not changed,” Harris insisted.
The Fallout
As viewers processed the content of the interview, many couldn’t help but feel that CNN had undercut the credibility of the entire segment by presenting it as live when it clearly wasn’t. The backlash was swift, with social media users and pundits alike questioning the network’s integrity. The irony of Harris and Walz being very much alive at a rally while their “live” interview aired was not lost on anyone.
In a media landscape where trust is increasingly fragile, this blunder by CNN could have lasting repercussions. For now, one thing is certain: Kamala Harris may not be able to be in two places at once, but CNN might wish it could go back in time to fix this PR mess.
