STAFFORD TOWNSHIP, NJ — Early on the morning of August 23, 2024, the Stafford Township Police Marine Unit responded to an urgent call from the United States Coast Guard regarding a vessel that had collided with an intercoastal water marker. The vessel suffered significant damage, began taking on water, and one person on board was injured.
Sergeant Christopher Smith and Patrolman Justin Barbuto, both members of the Marine Unit, were the first to arrive at the scene. They quickly located the distressed vessel, which had been intentionally beached near Thorofare Island to prevent it from sinking. The officers safely transferred the two occupants aboard their vessel.
Shortly after, the United States Coast Guard from Barnegat Light arrived and administered first aid to the injured boater. Both individuals were then transported to a nearby boatyard, where they received further medical treatment from the Great Bay First Aid Squad. Thankfully, the injuries sustained were not life-threatening.
The New Jersey State Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.
