GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Two Gloucester Township police officers were injured on Monday, August 19, 2024, while attempting to arrest a disorderly individual at the Fairways Apartment Complex in the Blackwood section of the township. The incident occurred after police responded to a report of a disturbance inside an apartment.
Upon arrival, officers began speaking with witnesses and identifying the apartment where the disturbance was reported. As they approached the residence, the door was opened by a male subject who began shouting at the officers, demanding that they leave. The man, identified as John R. Marchetti Jr., 45, of Blackwood, was described as highly antagonistic and aggressive.
Despite officers’ attempts to de-escalate the situation, Marchetti continued to berate them, challenging their presence both verbally and physically. The situation escalated when Marchetti lunged at the officers, leading to a brief struggle. The officers were ultimately able to subdue Marchetti and place him under arrest.
Both officers involved in the struggle sustained injuries and were treated at a local hospital. Marchetti was also transported to a hospital for medical evaluation and clearance.
Marchetti has been charged with obstruction, resisting arrest, two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, and criminal mischief. He was charged on a criminal warrant and remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility under New Jersey bail reform guidelines.
