NEWARK, N.J. — In preparation for the upcoming school year, the Archdiocese of Newark’s Mercy House successfully distributed more than 500 backpacks filled with essential school supplies to children across multiple locations this month. The Back-to-School Giveaway events were held in Newark, Jersey City, and Elizabeth, providing much-needed resources to local families.
On August 13, over 300 backpacks were handed out in Newark, with an additional 100 distributed in Jersey City on August 15 and another 100 in Elizabeth on August 16. Each backpack was packed with classroom essentials such as pencils, crayons, and glue sticks, and came in a variety of colors to suit the preferences of the children who received them.
“The Mercy House lives out the Catholic Church’s mission to help everyone in need. In this case, we knew families desperately needed items they couldn’t afford for the new school year, so we made sure they got everything and then some,” said Cheryl A. Riley, director of The Mercy House. She credited local archdiocesan parishes and outside organizations for their donations, which made the event possible.
In addition to receiving school supplies, families who attended the events were treated to free Italian ice, and several won raffle prizes that included dolls, toy trucks, and water toys. The giveaways provided a moment of joy and relief for the families as they prepared for the academic year.
The Mercy House, established in 2018, offers nonperishable food, clothing, baby supplies, and assistance with finding work and housing to those in need. Its three locations in Newark, Jersey City, and Elizabeth serve approximately 300 people each week.
