VIRGINIA BEACH, VA—A Virginia Beach Police Department officer fatally shot 61-year-old Robert Miller after being dispatched to a drug overdose incident on the evening of August 14.
The incident occurred in a residence located in the 1200 block of Quarter Way around 10:23 p.m.
Upon arrival, the first responding officer encountered a male and female struggling over a knife in an upstairs bedroom. Despite several commands to drop the weapon, the male, identified as Miller, charged at the officer with the knife, prompting the officer to discharge his firearm. Miller was subsequently transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Police Chief Paul Neudigate expressed his condolences, stating, “Our prayers go out to everyone affected by this tragic incident. We offer our comfort to the grieving family, our officer, and the community during this incredibly difficult time.”
He also noted that this was the second officer-involved shooting in less than 48 hours, highlighting the dangerous situations officers frequently face.
The officer involved in the shooting is uninjured and has been placed on administrative leave, as per standard procedure following a critical incident. The situation is under further investigation to determine the full details of the encounter.
