BURTONSVILLE, MD — A retired school administrator from Montgomery County is celebrating a $50,000 win after purchasing a Joker’s Wild scratch-off ticket, allowing her to pay off her debt and achieve financial freedom.
The Burtonsville resident, who retired a few years ago and supplemented her income with part-time work, regularly budgeted for her favorite Lottery games. Her dedication paid off when she bought the winning $5 Joker’s Wild ticket at the Giant store located at 12028 Cherry Hill Road in Silver Spring.
After purchasing the ticket, she took it to work and later used the Maryland Lottery app to scan it. Initially seeing a message instructing her to visit a Lottery retailer, she scratched off the rest of the ticket and was stunned to discover she had won the $50,000 top prize. The windfall allowed her to clear her debt, increase her savings, and plan a trip to Europe and a visit to her adopted family in Kenya.
The Giant store that sold the winning ticket will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery. The Joker’s Wild scratch-off game, which launched on July 22, still has six top prizes remaining out of the original eight, along with over 830,000 other unclaimed prizes ranging from $5 to $5,000.
