BROOKLYN, NY—A Brooklyn street gang member has been indicted for the murder of 13-year-old Troy Gill, who was fatally shot in Crown Heights earlier this year.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced that Jared McCauley, known as Jah Woo, 21, was arraigned today on charges stemming from the February incident that tragically ended the young teen’s life.
The indictment, which also involves codefendant Sheik Koureichi, includes charges of second-degree murder, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and first-degree reckless endangerment. Both suspects are being held without bail and are scheduled to return to court on August 16.
According to the District Attorney’s office, on the night of February 29, McCauley and Koureichi were allegedly targeting rival gang members when they encountered Troy Gill on Bergen Street near New York Avenue.
Gill, who had just left a Nets game at the Barclays Center, was shot while walking home and later died at Kings County Hospital from gunshot wounds to his back and arm.
The violence continued that evening as the defendants allegedly shot up the front door of a house associated with the Drench street gang in East New York, marking a spree of retaliatory gang violence linked to an earlier kidnapping and beating of McCauley by rival gang members.
