JACKSON, NJ — The Jackson Pathfinders, a volunteer group dedicated to trail maintenance and nature conservation in Jackson Township, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. This enthusiastic group, composed of men, women, teens, and scouts, has been pivotal in maintaining and enhancing local trails without charging any dues or fees.
The Pathfinders manage four major trails: the Purple Heart Trail at Bunker Hill Bogs Recreation Area, the Silver Stream Trail at the Metedeconk Preserve, the Steve Kitay Living Trail accessed via Silver Stream Trail, and the Jackson Jungle Children’s Trail near the Jackson Justice Complex. Each trail offers unique natural beauty for hiking, mountain biking, and nature appreciation.
To assist visitors, the Pathfinders have transitioned from traditional infocards to installing QR code signs at trail entrances. This modern approach helps reduce vandalism and provides instant access to detailed trail maps and stories through a simple scan.
The Pathfinders invite the community to their monthly planning meeting on Thursday, August 15, at 7:30 PM at the Jackson Township municipal building. This meeting is an opportunity for residents to contribute ideas for trail improvement.
For safety and enjoyment, the Pathfinders recommend wearing sturdy shoes, carrying water, and using tick prevention measures. Detailed advice on tick prevention and removal is available on their endorsed Rutgers University website.
Supported by local government and environmental bodies, the Jackson Pathfinders continue to foster a deep connection between the community and the natural environment. Their efforts ensure that the trails of Jackson remain beautiful and accessible for all to enjoy.
