Wildwood, NJ – Scot, a young great white shark, was recently spotted off the coast of New Jersey near Wildwood. Scot, tagged by Ocearch in 2017, has been tracked since he was 5 feet 2 inches and 56 pounds. He is anticipated to be much bigger today.
Great white shark pups can be between four and six feet long at birth, growing about 12 inches per year during their first five to six years. As they mature, they can reach lengths of around 10 feet. Based on this growth rate, Scot is expected to be around 7 or 8 feet long today as he nears adulthood.
This week, Scot was observed about 30 miles off the coast, passing by as he heads north for the winter. Since his tagging on August 17, 2017, in Montauk, NY, Scot has traveled consistently between the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf of St. Lawrence in Canada.
Ocearch’s tracking data shows Scot’s last ping on April 5, 2018, at 6:03 AM, with the latest Z-ping recorded on March 15, 2020, at 9:05 PM. Scot’s movements provide valuable insights into the migratory patterns and behavior of great white sharks, contributing to ongoing research and conservation efforts.
