Enosburgh, VT — A 23-year-old St. Albans resident has been arrested on an aggravated murder charge related to the death of Roberta Martin, 82, of Enosburgh. The Vermont State Police apprehended Darren Martell late Thursday.
Martell, who was staying with neighbors near Martin’s residence on Butternut Hollow Road, is scheduled for arraignment at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in St. Albans. He was already in custody at the Northwest State Correctional Facility on an unrelated charge of lewd and lascivious conduct.
Martell was detained without bail pending his arraignment. The aggravated murder charge carries a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole upon conviction. The Vermont State Police collaborated with the Franklin County State’s Attorney’s Office on the investigation.
An autopsy performed on Monday identified human remains found on Sunday as those of Roberta Martin. The cause and manner of her death remain undetermined. Martell was located and arrested following an incident near the St. Albans Town School, where he was seen by detectives.
