EASTON, MD – A fatal car crash in Easton, Talbot County, following a police pursuit, is currently under investigation by the Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General. The incident occurred on the evening of Monday, July 22, 2024, after an attempted traffic stop escalated into a chase.
According to the preliminary investigation, the pursuit began just after 7:00 PM when Talbot County Sheriff’s deputies, in marked cruisers, attempted to stop a vehicle on westbound Route 50 near Dutchmans Lane. Despite the activation of police emergency signals, the driver of the car refused to stop, leading to a several-minute chase assisted by the Easton Police Department.
The chase ended when the pursued vehicle crashed into a tree on the 8300 block of Black Dog Alley. Four individuals were in the car at the time of the crash. Emergency services, assisted by the officers, provided immediate aid. The driver, a juvenile male, and the front seat passenger, an adult woman, were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. The woman was later pronounced dead. Two other passengers, another juvenile male and an adult woman, also sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized.
The officers involved in the chase were equipped with body-worn cameras. The IID, aided by the Maryland State Police Crash Team, is examining the sequence of events leading up to the crash. The public is encouraged to come forward with any relevant information by contacting the IID.
In line with their protocols, the IID plans to release the names of the deceased and the involved officers within two business days unless an extension is necessary. Additionally, body-worn camera footage is expected to be made available within 20 business days, though this may be delayed under certain circumstances such as ongoing witness interviews or technical issues related to the anonymization of civilian identities.
