BRIDGEVILLE, DE—A tragic two-vehicle collision early Wednesday morning has resulted in the death of a Maryland man, with Delaware State Police continuing their investigation into the incident.
The crash occurred on July 17, 2024, at around 12:59 AM on Sussex Highway near Newtown Road. A 2017 Dodge Durango, traveling northbound, encountered a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe driving southbound in the northbound lane.
In an effort to avoid a head-on collision, both vehicles simultaneously moved to the right northbound lane, where they collided.
Djifenson Dorilus, 22, from Salisbury, Maryland, was the driver of the Hyundai. He sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries the following day, on July 18. The driver of the Dodge, a 46-year-old man from Millsboro, Delaware, was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
The collision caused the Hyundai to overturn and come to rest between the shoulder and the right lane, while the Dodge stopped at the centerline of the road. The incident led to the closure of the roadway for about three hours as emergency services cleared the scene and conducted preliminary investigations.
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash to determine the contributing factors and potential charges.
