HACKETTSTOWN, NJ—A FedEx truck crash caused by driver distraction led to a power outage affecting over 800 customers and resulted in multiple charges against the driver. The Hackettstown Police Department reported that the incident occurred on Tuesday, July 16, at about 2:59 PM near the intersection of Main Street and Valentine Street.
David B. Fiallos, 46, of Long Valley, NJ, was operating the vehicle westbound on Route 46 when he dropped his cellphone and attempted to retrieve it, causing the truck to veer off the road and collide with a utility pole. No injuries were reported at the scene.
Further investigation by the police revealed an open container of pink lemonade mixed with vodka inside the vehicle. Fiallos provided breath samples, showing a blood alcohol content of .12%, which is above New Jersey’s legal limit of .08%.
As a result of the crash, Route 46 was closed for several hours between High Street and West Stiger Street while repairs were made to the damaged utility pole. Fiallos faces several charges, including driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. He was released pending a court appearance.
