ROCKVILLE, MD – The Rockville City Police Department, in collaboration with the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, is set to host a gun buyback initiative aimed at reducing the number of firearms in the community. The event is scheduled for Saturday, August 17, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at RedGate Park, located at 14500 Avery Road, Rockville, MD 20850. This initiative will proceed rain or shine.
Community members are encouraged to voluntarily surrender their firearms with the incentive of receiving compensation through Visa gift cards. A $100 Visa gift card will be offered for each functioning handgun, rifle, and shotgun turned in. Additionally, a $200 Visa gift card will be provided for each functioning assault-style weapon and privately manufactured firearm (commonly known as ghost guns).
The event upholds a no-questions-asked policy, ensuring participants can surrender firearms anonymously without the need for identification. To participate, individuals must stay in their vehicles with all firearms unloaded and placed in the trunk. No walk-ups will be permitted, and loaded firearms are strictly prohibited.
The Rockville City Police Department will make the final determination on the eligibility of firearms for gift card issuance and reserves the right to limit the number of gift cards issued per person. Non-functioning firearms will be accepted, though no compensation will be provided for these items. Gift card availability is limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
This buyback program is part of a broader effort to enhance public safety by reducing the prevalence of unneeded and potentially hazardous firearms within the community.
