Rising Crime: Jugging Hits Maryland
Annapolis, MD – A new trend in theft known as “jugging” is gaining traction in Maryland. Jugging involves a perpetrator following a victim from a bank, ATM, or other financial institution to steal cash through threats of violence or direct assault.
Jugging is classified as an opportunity crime, where suspects choose their victims based on visible indicators of having cash, such as holding bank envelopes or cash bags. The victims are then confronted and either threatened or physically assaulted to surrender their money.
To combat this crime, authorities suggest several precautions:
- Always be aware of your surroundings and note any suspicious individuals or vehicles.
- Record any suspicious activities observed.
- Remain vigilant during visits to financial institutions.
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash; consider using cashier’s checks instead.

- Keep valuables hidden, preferably in the trunk of your car.
- Use drive-thru banking services whenever possible to minimize exposure.
- Exercise extra caution at ATMs, particularly with how you handle and display cash.
