A professor at the University of British Columbia, Karen Pinder, is facing intense scrutiny and backlash after making controversial remarks on social media regarding the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Following her comments, which expressed disappointment that the attempt was not successful, Pinder deleted her social media accounts.
Pinder, a Professor of Teaching at the university’s MEDD 411 (Foundations of Medical Practice I) and Director of Histology in Medical Undergraduate Education, posted: “Damn, so close. Too Bad. What a glorious day this could have been.” These remarks sparked immediate controversy, leading to her decision to withdraw from social media platforms.
With an extensive academic background, including a B.Sc. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Guelph, a Ph.D. in Anatomy & Cell Biology from the University of Cape Town, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Viral Oncology at Johns Hopkins University, Pinder’s comments have surprised many in the academic community and beyond.
The university has not yet released a statement regarding the incident or any potential actions to be taken concerning Professor Pinder’s remarks. The situation highlights the tension and division surrounding political figures and the impact of social media on professional reputations.
We reached out to Pinder for comment. She has not responded.
