The community of Green, Ohio, is mourning the tragic loss of a 13-year-old boy who died after falling from a Memorial Day parade float. The heartbreaking accident occurred late Monday morning, May 26, 2025, during the city’s Memorial Day parade, which takes place annually to honor and remember those who have served in the military. Green, located just south of Akron in Summit County, was filled with the usual parade festivities and celebration when the tragedy struck.

According to authorities, the young teenager was riding on a trailer that was being pulled by a pickup truck as part of the parade procession. Tragically, he fell off the front of the trailer and was then run over by the trailer’s tires. He sustained severe injuries in the accident and was immediately attended to by fire personnel who were already on site due to their presence at the parade for emergency response.

The boy was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, but despite the urgent medical care he received, he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The Green Fire Department confirmed the devastating news, expressing sorrow for the loss. The name of the child, a resident of North Canton, Ohio, has not been publicly released, respecting the privacy of the family during this difficult time.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident, describing the death as a “tragic accident.” Details of how exactly the boy fell and the precise circumstances surrounding the accident remain under review as officials work to understand what happened. The immediate response to the incident was swift, but the parade was ended abruptly, casting a somber tone over the community gathering.

Mayor Rocco Yeargin of Green spoke to reporters following the incident, expressing heartfelt condolences to the family. “Our hearts go out to the family at this time of terrible loss,” Mayor Yeargin said. “We look to support them as a Green community any way that we can.” The tragedy has deeply affected the city, and local officials have pledged to provide assistance and comfort to those impacted.

In addition to community support, the Green school district has extended counseling services to the North Canton school district to help students and staff cope with the loss. This gesture underscores the solidarity among neighboring communities in the face of such sorrow and the importance of mental health resources during times of grief.

The incident serves as a painful reminder of the importance of safety during public events, especially those involving children and young people. Parades are moments of joy and remembrance, but they also require strict safety measures to protect participants and spectators alike. Authorities and event organizers will likely review safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

This tragic event in Green, Ohio, adds to a growing list of heartbreaking accidents involving young lives lost in unexpected circumstances. Communities nationwide have been shaken by similar incidents, emphasizing the need for vigilance, preparedness, and support systems during public celebrations and gatherings.

The Memorial Day parade, intended to honor the sacrifice and service of veterans, now stands as a backdrop to a profound loss that will not be forgotten. As Green and surrounding areas continue to mourn, the hope remains that the community will find strength and unity to support one another and remember the young life taken too soon.

Anyone with information regarding the incident or who may have witnessed the accident is encouraged to cooperate with local authorities as the investigation continues. The community awaits answers and the opportunity to heal, while honoring the memory of the young boy whose life was tragically cut short on a day meant for celebration and remembrance.
